What is Identity Verification?

"Identity Verification" refers to the process of confirming the authenticity of identification documents in compliance with legal requirements.

This process is often crucial in various contexts, including:

Contractual Agreements: Verifying the identity of parties involved in a contract or legal agreement is essential for ensuring the validity and enforceability of the contract. This is also relevant to legal transactions regarding property and is used by solicitors and government bodies, like the Land Registry, to prove the identity of individuals. It is most often used during property transactions to protect against identity fraud.

Regulatory Compliance: Many industries, such as finance, healthcare, and legal services, are subject to regulatory requirements that mandate the verification of customers' identities. For example, financial institutions must comply with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations.

Age Verification: Certain activities, such as purchasing alcohol, tobacco, or adult content, may require verifying that the individual is of legal age. Age verification is also important for online platforms to comply with laws regarding the protection of minors.

Employment Screening: Employers may need to verify the identities of job applicants as part of the hiring process. This can involve conducting background checks and confirming the validity of identification documents.

What type of Identity Verification do I need?

In the context of identity verification in the United Kingdom, "ID1" and "ID2" typically refer to specific forms or processes used to verify an individual's identity.

Forms ID1 and ID2, which are intended to establish and validate an individual's identification, are necessary applications to the government, especially the Land Registry.

These documents provide as unquestionable proof that a person / company is who they say they are.

Here's what each term generally represents:

ID1: Certificate of identity for a private individual

This document is required by Land Registry in order to confirm the identity of a person (ID1) in cases where they aren't having legal representation during a property or conveyancing transaction. A certificate confirming that the identity of the person has been verified must be signed by a solicitor or legal officer.

The ID1 form collects essential personal information required for the passport application process, such as the applicant's full name, date and place of birth, contact details, nationality, and any previous names or changes of name.

Along with completing the ID1 form, applicants must provide supporting documentation, such as proof of identity and photographs meeting passport photo requirements.

ID2: Certificate of identity for a body corporate.

The main difference between ID1 and ID2 forms is what qualifies them. ID1 forms are only designed for individuals to fill out; ID2 forms are made especially for businesses.

ID2 verification is used to prove the identity of a person for a company or corporate body, often the Director.  This is required to carry out a land or property transaction by the company or corporate body.

It’s worth noting that ID1 and ID2 forms are not required if the value of the land related to the transaction does not exceed £6,000.
